The Minority side of the Parliamentary Vetting Committee has unanimously rejected the nominee for the position of Chief Justice, Baffoe-Bonnie.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin announced their decision, explaining that they do not accept the nomination and intend for the committee’s report to reflect only the Majority decision.
He asserted that the removal of the former Chief Justice, Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo, was illegitimate and unconstitutional.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin expressed concern that despite having genuine reservations about the removal of the former Chief Justice and the subsequent appointment of the new nominee, the Minority had been prevented from voicing their perspective.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin specifically accused the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, of actively obstructing their ability to express their views.
“We the Minority caucus vote enbloc to reject the nominee. We would want to state on record that the Majority can proceed with the questions. We do not want to procced with any question. We are however registering in the strongest term that we reject the nomination and the records should reflect that the report of this committee be a majority report.”
