The vetting of Acting Chief Justice, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, has taken a contentious turn following exchanges between Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga.
The confusion arose when Mr. Ayariga challenged Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s description of the apex court judge as a “disputed Chief Justice nominee.”
This description drew immediate objection from the Majority Leader, who noted that the vetting session was not a courtroom for making such remarks.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin accused the Majority Leader of acting in bad faith and attempting to stifle the Minority’s right to freely express their views during the process. He also criticized the removal of former Chief Justice Torkornoo, describing the process as opaque and unconstitutional.
Furthermore, he accused the government of undermining the independence of the judiciary for their political interests. However, the Majority Leader disagreed, indicating that these remarks were in breach of Parliament’s standing orders.
The committee has gone on a break after leaders from both sides of the committee failed to heed the chairman’s guidance to engage within the rules and allow the vetting to proceed.
