The family of the late Yaw Afriyie, the man who fatally set his wife, five children, and a grandchild ablaze, has been banished by the traditional authorities of Akyempim in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region.
The chiefs stated that the family could no longer remain in the area following the heinous act committed by their deceased relative.
Traditional leaders cited fears that the tragedy might be repeated, necessitating the decision to expel them.
A funeral for the deceased wife, children, and grandchild was held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. Significantly, the relatives of the late Yaw Afriyie were prohibited from attending the ceremony. They were subsequently banished following the performance of traditional rites by the chiefs.
Yaw Afriyie, who had a history of domestic abuse against his wife and children, committed suicide shortly after the crime. He reportedly set the family home alight after accusing his wife of infidelity.
The wife had previously left their matrimonial home due to the husband’s alleged refusal to provide adequate financial support for her and the family.
It was also reported that Afriyie was suffering from impotence but became jealous after a friend allegedly informed him that his wife was involved with another man.
He went to his wife’s residence, claiming he was there to give her money for the children, but the wife refused to engage with him. He then proceeded to set the building ablaze, resulting in the deaths of his wife, children, and grandchild.
Firefighters received the call at 1:04 a.m. and arrived at the scene 16 minutes later. They found the bedroom engulfed in flames and padlocked from the outside. Although officers successfully extinguished the fire within 12 minutes, it was too late to save anyone inside the building.
Afriyie was later found hanging from a tree in what authorities suspect was a case of suicide.
