The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNFF) has officially called for a forensic audit and a comprehensive investigation into all National Farmers Day celebrations organized between 2017 and 2024.
Nana Oboadea Boateng Bonsu II, Public Relations Officer for the Association, asserted that the events organized during this period were characterized by high levels of corruption, fraud, and related financial offences.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Bonsu II stated unequivocally that the selection processes for the award winners lacked transparency. He alleged that the majority of those selected to receive awards were chosen for political reasons.
He further lamented that the GNFF was completely excluded from the celebrations throughout the eight-year tenure of the previous administration.
Nana Bonsu II provided context for the demand: “The previous government failed to follow the laid-down processes. The selection was not transparent, marked by irregularities, fraud, and corruption. Some individuals involved in the selection processes accepted bribes and selected unqualified recipients. We have gathered evidence and are continuing to do so. We are calling for accountability. We want to know how funds meant for farmers were spent. That is why we are preparing our documents to petition the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate this matter.”
Call for Audit of Flagship Initiative
The GNFF spokesman also demanded a full audit of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) initiative.
He declared that the PFJ initiative “was a total waste, causing financial loss to the state, for which the Ministry of Food and Agriculture must account to the state and to the farmers.” He stressed that the initiative was intended solely for the benefit of farmers.
”Where did the outboard motors, premix fuel, and other resources meant for farmers go?” he questioned. “We do not want these corrupt activities to continue. That is why we are asking the new government to ensure its renewed agenda addresses these issues. The audit must be conducted so that anyone who has misapplied resources would be prosecuted.”
Nana Oboadea Boateng Bonsu II concluded by slamming the previous government for sidelining the constitutionally recognized body that regulates the activities of farmers and fishermen.
