The Member of Parliament for Agotime-Ziope, Hon. Charles Akwasi Agbeve, has emphasised the need for increased funding for local development, citing the inadequate allocation of resources to the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Bohyeba K. Afriyie, Rainbow Radio Parliamentary Correspondent, Agbeve noted that despite the government’s allocation of over 80% of DACF funds to the assemblies, the amount remains insufficient to address pressing issues in rural areas, such as roads, security, and support for farmers.
“We need to increase the allocation of the national budget to rural areas from 5% to 7.5% to address these challenges,” Agbeve said. “We need to prioritise rural development and create avenues for jobs and economic growth, rather than relying on limited opportunities.”
Agbeve’s comments come in the wake of the recent tragic incident at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, where young people were seeking to join the army. He urged the government to create economic opportunities and jobs in rural areas, citing the need for improved infrastructure, security, and access to markets.
