Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has donated GH¢100,000 to support victims injured in the El-Wak Sports Stadium stampede during a military recruitment exercise.
The amount is intended to assist with the medical treatment of those currently admitted and receiving treatment. Mr Bagbin, accompanied by Parliament’s leadership, visited the victims at the 37 Military Hospital on Thursday. The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, resulted in six fatalities.
Several others were left injured, with five in critical condition and 12 in fairly critical condition.
According to the Speaker, the donation aims to alleviate the financial burden on the victims and demonstrate Parliament’s solidarity with the affected families.
The Speaker also expressed grave concern about the recurring challenges associated with public sector recruitment exercises, emphasising the need for urgent reforms to make the process safer and more efficient.
Update by the Defence Ministry
Acting Defence Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson appeared before Parliament to provide an update on the incident.
He indicated that there were 34 casualties, including potential recruits and other persons not directly related to the exercise.
Six persons have been confirmed dead, five are critical and in ICU, 12 are fairly critical, and the rest are stable and under observation.
“In light of these developments, the Ministry of Defence has halted the recruitment process in the Accra Region until further notice, while other regional recruitment centers progress smoothly with improved phased schedule arrangements. The Ministry deeply mourns the loss of life and extends condolences to the affected families. The Ghana Armed Forces has instituted an internal Board of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the stampede.”
He assured the House that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure the safety and dignity of all applicants and to prevent the recurrence of this unfortunate incident.
