Hon. Frank Asiedu Bekoe, Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency, has expressed shock and sadness over the tragic stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium during the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise, which claimed multiple lives.

In a statement, Hon. Asiedu Bekoe extended his condolences to the bereaved families and called for an investigation into the incident. He questioned why such a tragedy occurred, citing previous administrations where recruitment exercises were conducted without major incidents.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Rainbow Radio Parliamentary Correspondent, he expressed deep condolences to the families of the young Ghanaians who lost their lives at the Elwak Sports Stadium and highlighted concerns about the recruitment process into the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Deputy Ranking Member of the Employment, Labour and Pensions Committee of Parliament questions why such incidents haven’t occurred during previous administrations, citing examples from Presidents Rawlings, Kufuor, Mills, Mahama’s first term, and Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

“Why now? What have we learnt as a country?” he asked, highlighting the need for accountability and learning from past experiences.

He emphasised that thousands of people were “bundled” into the stadium, leading to the tragic loss of lives.

Hon. Asiedu Bekoe’s comments come as the nation mourns the loss of these young Ghanaians, and the military has pledged to support the families of the victims.

Currently, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has suspended its ongoing military recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra until further notice following a deadly stampede that claimed six lives on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. Ghana travel guide

The decision, according to GAF, was taken to ensure the safety and proper coordination of the recruitment process going forward.

The stampede occurred after thousands of young Ghanaians thronged the stadium in a desperate bid to enlist in the Ghana Armed Forces.

The large crowd, coupled with intense jostling at entry points, led to chaos, resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities.

The military confirmed that six fatalities had been recorded after 28 people were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment. Five more are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and 12 remain in fairly critical condition.
