Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the National Theatre in Accra will undergo rehabilitation.
He said the renovation of the theatre will start in 2026 as part of a wider push to restore public cultural infrastructure and put performance spaces back at the centre of Ghanaian city life.
”Mr. Speaker, in 2026, government will rehabilitate the National Theatre in Accra. We will also commence site acquisition and design of a second national theatre in Kumasi,” Dr Cassiel Ato Forson stated.
He stated that there would be upgrades to sound, lighting, and stage infrastructure that local theatre companies need to stage larger works and touring productions.
The plan by the government is to modernise the theatre so it will serve as host to international festivals, attract cultural tourism, and support creative jobs across technical, production, and front-of-house roles.
Meanwhile, he had announced that the government will allocate funding to the Creative Arts Fund.
He told Parliament that the fund will receive GH¢20 million as startup capital to support music, fashion, visual art, culinary creative industries, and the wider value chains that sustain them.
“We will also establish the Creative Arts Fund for the arts, music, fashion, food and other creative sectors,” he said.
