The Deputy Minister for Defence, Brogya Genfi, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama has approved a decision to offer a replacement slot in the Ghana Armed Forces for each of the six families who lost a relative during a military recruitment exercise at the El Wak Stadium in Accra.
The Minister made this commitment during a visit to the family of the late Priscilla Larbi in Enyanmaim, located in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region.
Honourable Brogya Genfi pledged that one relative nominated by each deceased family would be enrolled into the Ghana Armed Forces to take the place of their deceased kin.
During the visit, the Deputy Defence Minister formally expressed his condolences and urged the community to offer comprehensive support to the bereaved families.
”We are committed to ensuring that the families affected are represented, and we stand with them during this difficult time,” he stated.
Lydia Agyekum, the mother of one of the deceased, welcomed the government’s announcement and expressed her gratitude for the gesture.
”I am grateful for the government’s decision to replace my son in the Security Service. It gives me hope amidst this tragedy,” she remarked.
Background
Six persons, all females, lost their lives during the recruitment exercise this week.
The Ghana Armed Forces issued a statement indicating that the stampede was triggered when applicants breached security protocols and forced their way through the gates before the scheduled time.
Following the stampede, the recruitment exercise being organised in Accra has been suspended until further notice.
An internal board of inquiry has also been established by the GAF to investigate the matter.
Officers who were in charge of the recruitment exercise have all been asked to step aside to allow for the investigation to continue.
