The Member of Parliament (MP) for Afram Plains North has asserted that the recent breakdown of the ferry on the Volta Lake constitutes a significant setback for local residents.
According to the MP, the incident poses a direct threat not only to the livelihood but also to the safety of the constituents.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Monday, November 17, 2025, the MP highlighted that the ferry is the sole reliable means for most commuters to cross the Volta Lake into the Volta Region and other parts of the country. He emphasized that the protracted absence of this service severely undermines the social and economic activities of the people.
The ferry has been out of service for nearly six weeks, compelling residents and traders to resort to using wooden boats. The MP lamented that the reliance on these alternative vessels presents a significant safety hazard to residents.
He revealed his commitment to addressing the issue, noting that he has personally intervened in the past to facilitate the repair of the ferry following previous mechanical failures.
The ferry, commissioned in 2016 by former President John Dramani Mahama, has historically served as the safest mode of transport on this critical route until the current and prolonged breakdown.
The MP’s statement underscored the gravity of the situation:”The ferry was commissioned by President John Dramani Mahama in 2016 and has since served as the primary and safest means of transport for the people. I have personally taken steps to ensure its repair whenever it encountered a fault. The dangerous alternative is the use of wooden boats, which have tragically resulted in the deaths of over 140 people in the past. This is a major concern because it directly affects trading and economic activities. Since 2016, the maintenance and servicing of the ferry have been a persistent challenge. It was originally equipped with two engines, but currently, only one is operational due to damage to the other. I have done my utmost to address this issue, and we are currently engaged in discussions to ensure a permanent resolution.”
He expressed his full support for the residents who have raised concerns over their safety and are demanding the immediate repair of the ferry to prevent any unforeseen disasters.
In the interim, the MP stated his commitment to purchasing life jackets for the residents; however, he strongly stressed the urgent need for immediate, decisive action from the relevant authorities to resolve the core mechanical issue.
