Police in the Northern Region have arrested four individuals in connection with the rape case that recently shocked the Tolon community.
The incident reportedly occurred on October 12, 2025, and has drawn widespread attention and calls for swift justice. Investigations are ongoing as authorities continue to pursue six additional suspects.
While the arrests mark a step forward, concerns are growing over the slow pace of apprehending the remaining perpetrators and the potential impact on justice for the survivor. Reports also suggest that some local chiefs and community members have attempted to settle the matter outside the formal legal process, raising fears that interference could undermine accountability.
Savana Signatures, a Ghana-based ICT for Development NGO, has strongly condemned such attempts to derail justice. The organisation is providing ongoing psychosocial and legal support to the survivor and has urged law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.
“When communities prioritise reputation over justice, they send a dangerous message that violence against women and girls can be negotiated or ignored,” said Dr Stephen Agbenyo, Executive Director of Savana Signatures. “We call on every leader, parent, and citizen to stand firmly with survivors and against impunity.”
The NGO stressed that eliminating sexual and gender-based violence requires communities to reject silence and stigma while supporting survivors through due legal process. Savana Signatures has also called on traditional authorities, opinion leaders, and state institutions to fulfil their moral and constitutional responsibilities by ensuring that the case is not derailed.
Police investigations remain ongoing as the Ghana Police Service and the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) continue their work to identify and hold all perpetrators accountable.
