The Cabinet has approved the Public Tribunals Bill, a legislative measure aimed at expediting the prosecution of illegal mining cases throughout Ghana.
President John Dramani Mahama revealed this information during a meeting with the Christian Council at Jubilee House on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
He elaborated that the introduction of the Public Tribunals Bill is intended to fortify the nation’s efforts to combat galamsey activities and reaffirm the government’s dedication to protecting the environment.
President Mahama explained that the Bill will authorise public tribunals to adjudicate galamsey-related offences, thereby alleviating the burden on the traditional court system and ensuring swifter, more efficient justice delivery.
According to President Mahama, this measure constitutes part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to prevent environmental degradation and safeguard Ghana’s forests and water bodies from the detrimental impacts of illegal mining.
“What the Cabinet did was to pass the Public Tribunals Bill so that we will push issues related to illegal mining to the public tribunals. They will adjudicate faster and ensure that justice is seen to be done,” he explained.
“If this comes into effect, we will be able to process cases against illegal mining even quicker,” he added.
