The President of KNUST UTAG, Professor Eric KK Abavare, has expressed scepticism about the effectiveness of democratic approaches in addressing Ghana’s galamsey crisis.
In a statement, Prof. Abavare declared that “Democratic antics can’t win the galamsey war in Ghana; I have concluded it is impossible. Democracy is a loser, mark my words.”
He argued that democracy prioritises human rights, making it ill-suited to tackle the issue, and suggested that alternative livelihoods would need to offer comparable or higher returns to lure youth away from galamsey.
Prof. Abavare advocated for a strategy of deprivation, targeting the “three combined trinity of excavators, changfangs, and chemicals,” to combat the menace.
He questioned whether the state and financiers would be willing to eliminate these elements, citing the low minimum daily wage and the lucrative nature of galamsey.
The UTAG President urged corporate bodies to implement the deprivation strategy, invoking the memory of Major Maxwell Mahama and the 8 officials who lost their lives in the fight against galamsey.
