Information obtained by Rainbowradioonline.com indicates that the Attorney-General has advised that the police officer who assaulted a GHOne TV journalist at the Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor Polling 2 Station, during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun be prosecuted.
Sources have informed this website that the advice from the Attorney-General’s office was given over a week ago.
It will be recalled that the journalist in question, Banahene Agyekum, was assaulted when he attempted to access the inner perimeter of the voting centre to cover the election.
The officer had approached and asked him to leave the premises, despite other media personnel being present at the same location.
Banahene told journalists at the time that he refused to leave, arguing that his role as a journalist required him to be present in case anything happened.
However, the said officer assaulted him, and the video of the incident went viral on social media.
The journalist later reported the incident to the Accra Regional Police Command.
The Ghana Police Service removed from election duty in Ablekuma North, interdicted, and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for further investigation.
A statement from the police assured the public of a comprehensive inquiry into the matter, promising to provide additional updates as investigations progress.
However, since the officer was interdicted, no new update has been provided regarding the matter.
In August this year, while engaging with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno revealed that the Police Professional Standards Bureau had completed investigations into the officer’s conduct and submitted a report.
Dr Yohuno further disclosed that the matter had been referred to the Attorney-General (AG) for advice.
The Attorney-General has since advised the prosecution of the officer who was seen in the video assaulting the journalist.
Additional information reaching us indicates that some top officials, including chiefs, are approaching the journalist to appeal to him to pardon the officer and withdraw from any court action.
