Assembly member for the Assekae Electoral Area, Hon. Kwame Duah, has confirmed that he was brutally assaulted by some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the operation of a public toilet in the area.

The disagreement over who should operate the toilet facility in the Kwesimintsim constituency, he said, led to the assault on him, a situation which the police are also slow in addressing.

Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he revealed that the toilet was originally constructed by the GNPC but was left to deteriorate.

After winning the assembly election, he was confronted by the residents to renovate the toilet so they could have a place to ease themselves.

The assembly member said efforts to raise funds to renovate the facility proved futile, and not even the MP for the area, the Chief, and others could help. So, as someone interested in seeing the toilet renovated, he went on to secure a loan facility of GHS100,000 using his house as collateral.

The original idea, he said, was to have someone manage it so he would be able to generate funds to pay off the loan.

However, the individual who managed the facility did not provide a good account and was sacked, but the Chief, who had an interest in the facility, made the said caretaker retain her job.

Later, members of the NDC confronted him and wanted to forcefully take over the toilet facility, which he disagreed with. It was then agreed that they would pay the loan, interest, and then give him one-third of the money generated.

This agreement, he said, was to be drafted and captured on paper so they could both sign, but it did not go as planned.

The said NDC supporters, numbering about 12 and allegedly led by their coordinator, then assaulted him.

According to him, the said coordinator has denied the allegations and accused Hon. Duah of assaulting him and has since been offered a police medical form to go to the hospital. No arrests have so far been made, and the assembly member says his lawyer is preparing to seek legal action over the matter.
