Ghana has transitioned from a regime of “criminal handling” of the economy to one of fiscal prudence within a remarkably short period of one year, as revealed by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga.
He noted that the 2026 budget presented to Parliament underscores a decisive shift in Ghana’s economic management.
The Leader made these remarks while concluding the debate on the budget statement on Thursday, November 27, 2025.
In his assessment, the budget serves as clear evidence of responsible and growth-orientated economic management.
He stated that the 2026 budget will generate growth because it reflects prudent management of the resources of this economy to achieve growth objectives.
“In one year—and this budget reflects this—we have shifted gears from a criminal handling of the economy to prudence. Indeed, the president had cause to describe the situation that we met in this country as a crime scene.”
On his part, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin claimed the 2026 budget contains multiple errors, including references to ministries that have been scrapped or renamed by the current government.
“How can you, at paragraph 519, claim that there is a Ministry of Railway Development? How can you, at paragraph 528, say there is a Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources and at paragraph 523 refer to a Ministry of Works and Housing?”
“This document has been brought to Parliament at least. This document must be withdrawn, and a new budget brought before Parliament,” he stated.
