The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched an investigation into allegations of extortion involving some officers of its Customs Division Task Force in the Ashanti Region.
The probe is being conducted after the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) made serious allegations of extortion by officials. TAGG specifically alleged that officers from GRA demanded additional payments from an importer who insisted that the charges were unjustified.
Reacting to this, GRA, in a press release, said it had taken note of reports that certain officers intercepted containers bound for Kumasi on claims that the goods were undervalued.
According to GRA, it is treating the allegations with the seriousness they deserve and has initiated a comprehensive internal inquiry to establish the facts.
The GRA added that the outcome of the investigation would be made public.
GRA added that it remains committed to transparency and accountability; the GRA encouraged traders, importers, and the public to report any suspected malpractice through its official channels, while adding that maintaining integrity within its operations remains a top priority.
