The Member of Parliament for the Weija Gbawe Constituency and Second Deputy Minority Whip, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has emphasised the need for increased accessibility and inclusivity for Ghana’s approximately 2.1 million persons with disabilities.
Speaking in Parliament on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Hon. Shaib noted that despite the Persons with Disability Act 2006, Act 715, many public spaces and infrastructure remain inaccessible to persons with disabilities.
“We are not doing what is expected of us,” Hon. Shaib stated, citing examples of inaccessible toilet facilities, lack of ramps, and inadequate parking spaces for persons with disabilities.
Hon. Shaib called for greater inclusion and opportunities for persons with disabilities, highlighting their achievements in sports, such as the Paralympics.
The MP urged fellow lawmakers to take action to address the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, saying, “Let us make room for them. Let us make provisions for them in our infrastructure, education, homes, schools, businesses, and sports.”
