Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana (PWG), has called on public appointees, especially those who originated from financially challenging backgrounds, to allow their difficult personal histories to guide and inspire them towards dedicated national service, rather than resorting to corruption.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Madam Daniels emphasized that individuals with first-hand experience of poverty understand its profound societal disruption.
Therefore, she argues, their appointment to public office should be a mandate for service marked by uncompromising integrity.
Madam Daniels criticized the disconnect she observes in some leaders: “Our leaders, who have witnessed the development and systems in other countries, often fail to replicate that here in Ghana. Instead, upon returning and gaining office, they compromise their positions, misappropriate public resources, and prioritize the enrichment of themselves and their families.”
She asserted that it is high time that appointees serving in various capacities demonstrate a genuine commitment to the national interest and uphold a standard of accountability to the Ghanaian people.
“Some of our appointees hail from extremely difficult backgrounds; some knew years of severe deprivation. They managed to survive and are now serving in prominent roles as lawyers, judges, ministers, and CEOs. Yet, tragically, they have forgotten their past,” she stated.
She stressed that these individuals, more than any others, should be compelled by their past struggles to serve in a manner that improves the lives of all Ghanaians.
“Instead, they often join the ranks of those who loot, which is both regrettable and unfortunate. We urgently require men and women of unwavering integrity to serve our country,” she added.
Madam Daniels concluded with a warning about the societal cost of corruption: “How can Ghana develop when we have greedy individuals stealing from us? Ghana belongs to all of us, and we must not destroy it. If we continue to see our leaders steal public funds, we risk fostering a generation of criminals, armed robbers, and lawless, deviant citizens.”
