The Member of Parliament for the Weija Gbawe Constituency and Second Deputy Minority Whip, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has expressed concerns over the lack of records and structure in Ghana’s hospitals, citing a personal experience at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Shaib recounted his visit to the hospital, where a doctor claimed not to have any record of him, despite knowing the MP.
He questioned the effectiveness of the National Health Insurance Scheme and the cash-and-carry system, emphasising that patients are still paying for services.
“Speaker, about three weeks ago, I was at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for a medical check-up, and the doctor told me in plain terms, ‘I don’t know you. I do not have any record of you. So I do not even know what you are here for'” Hon Shaib stated.
He highlighted the need for improved healthcare infrastructure, citing issues with maternal care, ambulance services, and the Ghana Medical Transplant, and urged that legacy projects should not come at the expense of pressing healthcare needs.
Hon. Shaib urged the government to prioritise social interventions and address the pressing healthcare needs of Ghanaians.
Hon Shaib also raised concerns over the state of healthcare in Ghana, specifically highlighting issues with ambulance services and the Agenda 111 project.
He revealed that his constituency’s ambulance has been grounded for two to three months, and MPs are now responsible for financing their own ambulances.
He questioned the prioritisation of funds for the Agenda 111 project, emphasising the need for continuity in social infrastructure.
“Speaker, ambulance services are also captured. My ambulance is grounded, and it’s the responsibility of MPs to prefinance their mobility,” Hon Shaib stated.
He stressed that legacy projects should not come at the expense of pressing healthcare needs.
Hon Shaib’s comments come as the government allocates funds for the 2026 budget, with concerns over the effectiveness of the National Health Insurance Scheme and healthcare delivery.
