The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) announcement of a 9.86% increase in electricity tariffs and a 15.92% hike in water tariffs is set to take effect from January 1, 2026.
A section of the Ghanaian public has slammed the government over the new increment, describing it as unfortunate.
The TUC also believes that there was the need for the government to review the increment in wages upwards or withdraw the tariffs adjustment.
The union plans to mobilise workers to resist the hikes and will outline its next steps at a press conference on December 8.
“You gave us just a 9% increment in wages and you have increased water and electricity by over 9 plus 15 percent. That is unfortunate and we want to state categorically that it is unacceptable to us. They either withdraw it or review the 9% wages. Leadership will meet next week Monday and take a decision on the next line of action.
This would will wipe out the already-contested wage increment. Already, Ghanaian workers had rejected the 9% raise as inadequate amid rising living costs, and we cannot accept the increased tariffs.”
