The True Drivers Union has commended the government for prioritising the continuation of the Ofankor-Nsawam road project.
In August 2025, commercial drivers gave a one-week ultimatum for the government to repair the road or face a mass protest and strike.
The drivers described the road as “unmotorable” and “extremely dangerous,” leading to frequent vehicle maintenance and reduced vehicle lifespans.
President John Dramani Mahama was forced to pay a visit to the project site and to assure the contractor that funds would be allocated
for the continuation of the project.
Three months after his visit, the project is almost 77 percent complete, with the road expected to be completed ahead of schedule.
Commenting on this, Public Relations Officer for the True Drivers Union, Yaw Barimah, noted that they would like to commend the government, however, they also want to stress the need for the project to be completed as scheduled.
He explained that they had raised concerns over the delay in the project and called on authorities to address their concerns.
He said political leaders, when they assume power, must deliver on their promises and do things that will enhance the living conditions of the people.
“Commercial drivers had raised concerns over the project and the danger it posed to us. We gave the authorities an ultimatum, and truly, they took action. President Mahama went there, and today, the project has progressed steadily. The project is not over, but we have seen remarkable improvement. Before the elections, President Mahama met us at the Trades Union Congress and went into an agreement with us to vote for him so that when he comes, he will invest in infrastructural projects including roads, and so after the elections, we have done our part, and he is supposed to deliver on his promises. That is why I am not surprised that this government is investing in several road projects.”
