The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has received a comprehensive plan for the redevelopment of Agbogbloshie Market into a modern 100,000-stall complex from the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, to promote orderly trading, improve sanitation and ease congestion in the city.
The plan, titled Urban Regeneration of Agbogbloshie, was formally presented to the mayor when the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, engaged members of the Ga Traditional Council in Accra.
The visit, which formed day two of the Regional Minister’s tour, was used to consult the Ga Mantse on key developmental challenges and reaffirm the President’s commitment to working closely with traditional authorities for the progress of the Ga-Dangme people.
Before receiving the document, the Mayor of Accra reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to collaborating with the Ga Traditional Council to address concerns of the Ga people.
“The visit was also to listen directly to the concerns of the Ga people and better understand the barriers affecting the development of Ga land, so that the Assembly, Regional Coordinating Council and traditional authorities could work together to find solutions,” he said.
The Ga Mantse said the plan, when operational, would help address the growing problem of roadside trading in Accra, adding that an investor was ready to undertake the project.
He called for support to redevelop the area into a proper facility to help decongest the city, relocate traders from the roadside into a dignified environment and significantly improve sanitation.
Addressing the gathering, the Greater Accra Regional Minister thanked the Ga Mantse and members of the Ga Traditional Council for their support and emphasised the need to resolve chieftaincy disagreements to ensure peace and development.
She added that she was also grateful to God that the Ga Traditional Council had established an investment desk, noting that many investment opportunities were forthcoming.
She appealed to the Council to keep her office informed, since the project was intended to commence immediately, and assured His Royal Majesty that they would return to meet him specifically to agree on the way forward and translate the project into reality.
She also announced the launch of a “Traffic Free for Christmas” initiative to tackle vehicular and human congestion during the festivities, adding that all police district commanders and regional commands for Accra and Tema would be engaged to strategise on traffic management and ensure a smoother flow of movement in the city.
