Akufo-Addo’s post-Covid-19 decisions, including the Cathedral project, DDEP, and others, caused our defeat – Kufour

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has admitted that the second term of former President Akufo-Addo was characterised by some challenges that caused the draft of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The former leader noted that the National Cathedral Project, which was poorly handled, was one of the major reasons they lost.

He lamented that initially it was announced that the project would be done with support from private funding; however, it later turned out that state resources had been allocated.

He also criticised the decision by the previous government to demolish judges’ bungalows and other buildings in the name of the project, which could not be completed before Akufo-Addo left office.

Speaking on The Delay Show, he also noted the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) and Power Distribution Services deal were also challenged, which affected the party.

“The campaign of the 2016 elections, which Akufo-Addo won, was built on my achievements. My achievements played a role in securing him the victory. The government started on a good note, but things changed after he assumed power.”

He acknowledged that the former president managed the outbreak of Covid-19 well, but after that, things became worse.

“I could not understand some of the decisions taken by the previous government, including the bond market issues, PDS and the National Cathedral project, which has still not been completed,” he added.

He added that the NPP won the 2016 elections by a landslide, but the 2020 and 2024 elections were vastly different, showing that Ghanaian voters should never be taken for granted.
