Dr Fredrick Appoh, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), has announced the successful conclusion of the feasibility study for the Accra-Kumasi rail line.
During an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline programme on Monday, December 8, 2025, Dr Appoh confirmed that the design for the project has been finalised.
The entire project is estimated to cost between $3 and $4 billion.
Dr Appoh underscored the need for Ghana to provide strong financial guarantees to potential private investors to ensure the return on their investments upon the project’s completion.
He also added the strategic importance of successfully developing the Western rail lines, which extend from the Takoradi Port and connect key mining areas like Nyinahin, Nsuta Mines, and Awaso.
He posited that revenue and proceeds generated solely from the Western Line could fund the development of the entire remaining Ghanaian railway network, thereby minimising the need for government financing.
He disclosed a long-term plan to extend the railway network from Accra to Paga at an estimated cost of $7 billion.
In terms of construction costs, the CEO clarified that building one kilometre of railway track is estimated to cost approximately $5 million.
Dr Appoh concluded by stressing that effective railway operation is contingent upon the establishment of proper and reliable rail infrastructure.
