The Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, has asserted that the communication from Parliament declaring the Kpandai constituency seat vacant is significantly delayed.
Speaking on the Frontline programme on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Jibril acknowledged the belated nature of the notification but stated, “It was better late than never.”
He further criticised the Electoral Commission (EC) for its perceived lack of urgency regarding the Kpandai seat, particularly following the Tamale High Court’s order for a rerun of the election.
”The notification, which was sent to the EC on December 2, has arrived, although it is long overdue. What is also surprising is that the EC failed to act on this directive until the mandated seven days had elapsed. We have received no official communication from the EC regarding this matter. The Commission should have immediately taken steps to announce plans for rerunning the election,” Mr Jibril commented.
He expressed the NDC’s expectation that the EC would issue the official notice of polls for the rerun by the close of work today, Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
Mr Jibril calculated that had the EC promptly adhered to the court’s order, the rerun could have been organised by December 23, 2025. He did, however, concede that the government might seek a further extension from the court to adequately prepare for the organisation of the rerun.
Despite the procedural delays, Mahdi Jibril expressed strong confidence in an NDC victory in the rerun, attributing this optimism to the perceived achievements of the government over the past year.
The NDC Deputy Director of Elections also used the interview to criticise the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the party of hypocrisy and a lack of principle.
He pointed out the contradiction between the NPP’s public stance—alleging judicial bias and filing cases to halt the rerun process—and their active campaign efforts on the ground in Kpandai.
”Kwabena, are you aware that the NPP is currently campaigning in the constituency? As I speak with you, the General Secretary of the party and his team are in the constituency. These individuals lack principle. This is the kind of leadership we are dealing with,” he stated.
Mr Jibril recalled a similar incident during the Ablekuma North rerun: “Do you remember they filed an injunction in the Ablekuma North rerun, and yet, they went about campaigning? These are the people who wanted to govern this country. They should cease peddling falsehoods while actively campaigning for votes in the constituency.”
