Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah, Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, has welcomed the passage of the Okada Commercialisation Bill, emphasising the need for effective regulation to ensure safety.
Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Acquah acknowledged the risks associated with Okada operations, citing numerous accidents and fatalities. He stressed that while the bill’s passage is a positive step, implementation is crucial to protecting citizens.
He also emphasised the need for the government to provide alternative transportation options to reduce reliance on Okada motorcycles.
Hon. Acquah stressed that while the legalisation of Okada is a step forward, the government must prioritise safer transportation alternatives to minimise the risks associated with motorcycle accidents.
He urged authorities to invest in improving public transportation systems, making them more efficient, reliable, and accessible to the public. This, he believes, will reduce the number of people relying on Okada for daily commutes.
Hon. Acquah’s comments come as the government tables a bill to legalise commercial motorcycle operations, citing the need to regulate the sector and enhance safety standards.
Hon. Acquah urged authorities to establish robust regulatory frameworks, including mandatory rider training, licensing, and safety standards. He also emphasised the importance of providing alternative transportation options to reduce reliance on Okada.
The bill aims to amend the Road Traffic Act 2004 to permit commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations, with regulations on safety gear, seat belts, and industry rules.
