In a statement issued today, Thursday, December 11, 2025, Professor Eric KK Abavare, President of University of Science and Technology-Kumasi UTAG, hailed the repeal of LI 2462 as a significant milestone in the fight against galamsey.
According to Professor Abavare, “At long last, the battle to revoke LI 2462 is done. This is the beginning of the war. It still rages. The destruction is ongoing, but we now know that what strengthened their hands has been cut off.”
He commended H.E. John Dramani Mahama for his efforts in securing the repeal of LI 2462, describing it as “better late than never”. Professor Abavare also praised the work of NAIMOS men in the fight against galamsey.
However, he emphasised that there is still more work to be done, stating that “land reclamation has not been discussed or started” and called on the Auditor-General to release the assessment report.
Professor Abavare also criticised individuals who have contributed to the galamsey menace, citing Mr Atwi Bosiako as an example, and urged him to “go and reclaim the forest he destroyed and return the gold bars”.
The statement concluded with a call to action, urging Ghanaians to collectively work towards ending galamsey and remembering those who have lost their lives in the fight against it.
May the souls of those who perished in the cause of the galamsey fight never be forgotten.
