Tema West MP James Enu condemns the Minority’s protest against Parliament’s declaration of the Kpandai seat as vacant, citing due process and urging the Minority to explore better ways to address concerns.
Speaking on the issue, Hon. Enu stated that the Minority’s actions were uncalled for, as due process was followed in declaring the seat vacant.
He explained that the judgement nullifying the election of the MP had been communicated to the Clerk, triggering the constitutional process for declaring the seat vacant.
Hon. Enu noted that the Clerk had no option but to proceed with the process, as there was no stay of execution or application pending before the court to restrain him from doing so. He added that the Electoral Commission also had no choice but to proceed with the by-election, which has been slated for December 30.
The MP indicated that the minority should have taken the necessary steps to stay the judgement pending appeal, rather than attempting to disrupt the proceedings of Parliament.
He described the protest as a clear attempt to undermine the authority of Parliament and expressed disappointment that the minority resorted to such tactics.
He stressed the importance of Parliament’s role in Ghana’s democracy, stating that it has contributed to the country’s stability and made it a beacon of hope for Africa.
He noted that the minority’s actions were a mark of instability and unacceptable, especially considering Ghana’s history of political stability since the 1992 constitution.
Hon. Enu commended the majority for exercising restraint and proceeding with the day’s business, saying it was a testament to their commitment to democracy. He expressed hope that the minority would learn from the experience and refrain from similar actions in the future, as it was not a good spectacle for the public.
The MP stressed Ghana’s reputation as a model of democracy in Africa, with a stable political landscape, and urged all stakeholders to protect and strengthen it.
