The Deputy Director of Elections for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Gibril, has alleged that the recent protest in the Kpandai constituency, organised by individuals and supported by some chiefs opposing the court-ordered rerun, was sponsored by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Matthew Nyindam.
Mahdi Gibril asserted that despite the public outcry, accusations, and allegations regarding the Tamale High Court’s decision to order a rerun of the 2020 parliamentary election, the NDC is currently engaged in an intensive campaign, urging constituents to vote for their party.
Gibril questioned the NPP’s commitment to their claims, stating that a party alleging that the electoral system was biased against them should not be seen campaigning aggressively in the same area.
The NDC Deputy Director claimed that Matthew Nyindam’s popularity in the constituency is rooted in his alleged foreknowledge that his seat would be declared vacant, prompting pre-emptive action.
According to Gibril, Nyindam has been consistently inciting chiefs and constituents against the government. He noted that the NPP candidate’s popularity stems from his actions while the court case was pending:
“Matthew Nyindam has become so popular in the constituency because while the case was ongoing, he was going to the grounds and inciting people and the chiefs. He knew how the outcome of the case would be, and so he was going to the constituency, engaging the chiefs and people, and inciting them,” he said on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
Gibril went on to provide a specific example regarding the recent protest:
“You remember there was a press conference recently held. Matthew Nyindam was the one who sponsored it. The lead chief who led the press conference is a resident at Nkwanta, but he went to rent a hotel, designed the location like a palace, and rented a stool, pretending to be a chief.”
Despite the NPP’s intensified campaigning, Mahdi Gibril expressed confidence in an NDC victory. He stated that the NDC would emerge as the winner of the Kpandai seat, irrespective of survey reports such as the one conducted by Musaa Dankwa.
While admitting that the NPP has been running an intense campaign, Gibril maintained that the party would ultimately lose the rerun.
He concluded by advising the NPP to “stop peddling falsehoods about the process and let the Ghanaian public know about the true reflection of the issue.”
