A 14-year-old boy lost his life in a violent confrontation at a mining site in Adelekezu, near Dadwen, in the Western Region, with several vehicles also destroyed.
Details indicate that the incident unfolded on Saturday following a dispute between local youths and private security personnel employed by the mining company.
The situation escalated when a group of youths attempted to seize a pump-action shotgun from one of the security officers, resulting in the weapon’s discharge and the fatal wounding of the boy.
He was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The minor’s death sparked further violence, with angry youths attacking the mining site, setting ablaze two four-wheel-drive vehicles and two tipper trucks, and damaging a pickup truck and a Toyota Land Cruiser.
Workers at the site were reportedly threatened during the unrest, prompting officers to rescue 11 people from the area.
Five suspects, including three adults – Gyenyame Owusu, 38, Matthew Asamah, 24, and Kojo Agyei, 21, as well as two teenagers aged 15 and 16, have been arrested in connection with the violence.
The suspects are currently in custody on suspicion of causing harm and unlawful damage, according to the Police.
