Asantehene urges government to uphold law recognizing Bawku Naba, enforce it strictly for peace

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has emphasized the necessity of strictly enforcing Ghana’s existing laws, which recognize Asigri Abugrago Azorka II as the lawful Bawku Naba.

This enforcement, he believes, would significantly contribute to achieving lasting peace in Bawku.

He stated this while presenting the final report on the mediation he led at the Jubilee House on December 16, 2025.

The respected traditional ruler stressed that no chief or traditional authority supersedes the Constitution or court decisions.

He advised the government to uphold the laws enacted and affirmed by the Supreme Court until they are lawfully changed or reviewed.

The Asantehene was tasked with mediating peace talks between rival groups led by the Nayiri of Mamprugu, Nayiri-Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Bawku Naba, and other traditional leaders.

The mediation was part of efforts aimed at finding a lasting solution to the longstanding conflict in Bawku, which has resulted in several deaths and injuries between Kusasi and Mamprusi groups.

The Asantehene noted that the Bawku chieftaincy issue has been settled through PNDC Law 75, the 1992 Constitution, and subsequent Supreme Court rulings, all recognizing the Bawku Naba as the head chief with jurisdiction over the Kusasi traditional area.

He disclosed that the Nayiri has expressed willingness to make concessions in the interest of peace, describing the decision as difficult but necessary.

However, he added that any concessions must align with the law and respect existing legal authority, warning that continued failure to enforce the lawful status of the Bawku Naba is fueling insecurity in the area, an escalating security concern requiring firm and lawful action.

“The final recommendation, Mr. President, I recommend that my brother, the Nayiri, accept the laws as presently constituted as Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, the chief of Bawku and head chief of the Kusasi traditional area.”

“Accordingly, the laws which recognised Asigri Abugrago Azoka II must be enforced by the government of the Republic of Ghana until changed in accordance with the 1992 constitution or reviewed by the Supreme Court of Ghana.”
