Mahdi Gibril credits Mahama’s policies for shifting economy from ‘extreme hardship’ to ‘appreciable growth

December 16, 2025
Mahdi-Gibril

Mahdi Gibril, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has indicated that the country is doing better compared to last year.

He noted that Ghanaians experienced extreme hardship under the previous government led by former President Akufo-Addo.

He said that since President John Dramani Mahama took office, the nation has witnessed some appreciable growth in the economy, with Ghanaians experiencing better living conditions.

The prices of goods and services, he noted, have seen some reductions, urging traders who were yet to reduce their prices to do so in line with the gains made.

The cedi, he said, has appreciated against the dollar and other major currencies, while the inflation rate is now in single digits, with the interest rate also reducing significantly.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that the government remains committed to ensuring that stability is maintained in order to ensure that Ghanaians experience better living conditions.

Mr Gibril said the “Big Push” initiative is a bold project which surpasses even the Eastern Corridor road project.

He posited that the government is funding this project through internally generated funds without having to spend on external funds.

He told host Kwabena Agyapong that if the previous government had remained committed, dedicated, and not engaged in all manner of corruption, and had managed the country the way President John Dramani Mahama is doing at the moment, we would not have experienced the economic mess they left us in.

“Within eleven months, inflation has reduced to the point that we have recorded a single-digit figure. The cedi has appreciated against the dollar and other major currencies. We have witnessed stability and economic growth. The “Big Push” is a major initiative surpassing the Eastern Corridor project. If the previous government had remained committed and dedicated and ensured fiscal discipline and had managed the economy the way President Mahama has done in the first eleven months, we would not have witnessed the economic mess they left us in.

The government introduced the ‘No Fees Stress’ initiative and free university for PWDs, among others. If we are able to maintain fiscal discipline, Kwabena, I can assure you that we will see massive progress. For the first time in our history, we have witnessed a period where traders have reduced their prices. Sector by sector, we are seeing positive achievements, and that is purely good governance. If the NPP had remained in office, we would have regretted it.”
