The Member of Parliament for the Pru East Constituency, Hon. Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, has appealed to Ghanaians to prioritise road safety during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. In a passionate plea, he emphasised that every life matters and that the country cannot afford to lose more lives to road accidents.
Hon. Boam highlighted the alarming statistics of road accidents in Ghana, revealing that from January to November this year, the country recorded about 13,000 road accidents, resulting in the loss of 2,600 human lives. He attributed these accidents to human error, stressing that most of them are preventable.
The MP urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads, emphasising that safety is everyone’s responsibility. He also called on vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and not to pressure drivers to make multiple trips.
“We need everybody alive,” Hon. Boam stressed. “Last year, you gave us a mandate, and had we lost everybody in Ghana, there wouldn’t have been voting, there wouldn’t have been elections, and nothing would have happened because there’s nobody here.”
He emphasised that the people of Ghana matter to the government and that they should exercise caution in the way they drive. “We plead that we should exercise caution in the way we drive so that we will save humans, we will save the public,” he said.
Hon. Boam also expressed his condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in road accidents, noting that the breadwinners are often the ones who travel during this time of the year, leaving behind families plunged into poverty.
He urged all stakeholders, including drivers, passengers, and vehicle owners, to prioritise safety and care for one another. “Let us all care for each other. Christ cared for us; he died for us. This is why God gave him to be born so that he saves the world. So be a saviour to the world; save somebody this season,” he appealed.
