Alhaji Majid Amadu, the General Secretary of the Okada Riders Association of Ghana, has shared a harrowing personal account of being robbed at gunpoint in 2024.
Speaking in an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Alhaji Amadu revealed that the attack occurred on the Accra-Tema Motorway.
He recalled being approached by two individuals on another motorbike who pointed a weapon at him and demanded his brand-new motorcycle.
“Personally, I have been robbed before,” he recounted. “In December 2024, I encountered a robbery attack. A gun was pointed at me, and I was told to hand over my motorbike or die. I reported the matter to the Airport Police Station, but nothing has been done about it.”
During the encounter, a passenger he was transporting managed to escape, leaving Amadu alone with the assailants. After seizing the bike, the robbers stabbed him before fleeing the scene.
Rising Insecurity and Proposed Solutions
Addressing the broader issue of safety for motorcyclists, Alhaji Amadu described the frequency of these attacks as deeply troubling.
To combat this trend, the Association has begun implementing measures to protect its members: “Since most attacks occur under the cover of night, the Association has proposed that all riders conclude their operations by 6:00 PM.
Alhaji Amadu raised concerns regarding the influx of foreign nationals entering the “Okada” business, arguing that they are displacing Ghanaian riders and calling for stricter regulations.
The General Secretary emphasised that the Association remains committed to adopting new strategies to reduce the vulnerability of its members to such violent crimes.
