A Nigerian aircraft and its crew have arrived safely in Ghana after being detained by authorities in Burkina Faso.
The release marks the end of a brief standoff triggered by allegations that the aircraft had violated Burkinabe airspace.
The resolution was confirmed on Saturday, December 20, 2025, in a statement issued by the Presidency of Ghana.
The crew was officially received in Accra by Colonel Larry Gbevlo Lartey, Ghana’s Special Envoy for the Sahel. Acting on behalf of the President, Col. Lartey welcomed the airmen and expressed relief at the peaceful conclusion of the incident.
Speaking at the brief ceremony, Col. Lartey commended the governments of both Nigeria and Burkina Faso for their willingness to engage in high-level diplomacy.
According to him, the successful mediation reflects a spirit of solidarity within the West African subregion.
“This incident is an indication that we are brothers and sisters,” Col. Lartey stated. “It proves that we can resolve our differences in a neighbourly manner through diplomatic means.”
The aircraft was reportedly en route to Europe for maintenance before it was intercepted.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a statement issued on December 20, 2025, said the crew will now remain in Ghana temporarily to recuperate.
During this stopover, the aircraft will undergo essential technical checks as the team awaits final clearance to resume their journey to Portugal, where the plane is scheduled for servicing.
