Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, has assured that the Electronic Communications Act Amendment Bill will be carefully reviewed to ensure it doesn’t compromise freedoms guaranteed in Ghana’s constitution.
Speaking at the Parliament Media Soirée and Recognition Night, he emphasised the need for media personnel conditions of service, calling their work “public service” producing valuable “life” goods.
The Speaker underscored the importance of parliament-media collaboration, citing declining public trust in democracy and governance institutions.
He urged journalists to partner with parliament to amplify citizen voices, enhance budget transparency, and hold officials accountable.
The Speaker also referenced Ghana’s 1992 Constitution review, stressing the need for inclusivity and citizen engagement. “We need to take these things along to put the framework in the new constitution,” he said.
He commended media professionals for their work and assured them of parliament’s support. He requested their assistance in shaping the country’s future through the constitutional review process.
Rt Hon Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin also emphasised the need for Ghana to establish conditions of service for media personnel. “I want to stress again that it’s important that as a country we put in place some conditions of service for media personnel. Very important.”
He explained that media professionals are not serving themselves but rather the nation and the public. “What they are doing is not serving themselves. It’s serving the nation. It’s serving the public. That is public service, and the goods they produce are even more valuable than what is manufactured from the factory. It’s life,” he said.
