The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has temporarily suspended the implementation of new licence plates.
According to the Authority, the new RFID-embedded licence plates are designed to enhance traceability and road safety, pursuant to amendments to the Road Traffic Act, 2004, and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012. However, the rollout requires amendments to two legal instruments, namely the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683) and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which specify licence plate features.
The DVLA stated that while Parliament successfully amended Act 683, the proposed amendments to L.I. 2180 were not finalised before Parliament adjourned for recess on December 19, 2025.
Consequently, the planned rollout of new licence plates, originally scheduled for January 2, 2026, has been suspended.
The Authority further announced the extended use of current Departure from Port (DP) stickers and DV Plates.
