The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has called on officers of the Service to uphold integrity and professionalism in tackling crime nationwide, including illicit mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
He emphasised that despite the challenges inherent in crime-fighting operations, which have led to the loss of approximately 20 officers in the line of duty in 2025, personnel must remain resolute, disciplined, and firm in enforcing the law.
This advice was given during a ceremony to promote members of the Special Investigative Team that investigated the 2020 and 2024 election violence, as well as the IGP’s Anti-Galamsey Task Force, held at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
He stressed the need for officers to serve with integrity, courage, and loyalty to the Service in the execution of their duties.
“This selfless work, determination, and perseverance are what we are talking about, and that is what we want the over 49,000 police personnel who are working in the field to learn: that hard work pays. Don’t do it for the sight of anybody, but do it from your heart, and it will come to a time God will reward your hard work,” he said.
Superintendent of Police Bawah Abdul Jalil, the officer in charge of the Special Anti-Galamsey Task Force set up by the Inspector-General of Police, said they remain committed to the fight against illegal mining and other forms of crime.
“The team was deployed to the Ashanti Region with 105 men, with the focus of bringing sanity to the area. There were instances where we were confronted with situations, especially with the seizure of excavators.
“We were confronted with attacks. We received gunshots, but fortunately, the situation came under control. The evidence is out there for Ghanaians to judge,” he said.
On his part, Chief Superintendent of Police John Kwaku Lodonu, the lead for the Special Investigative Team that probed the 2020 and 2024 elections, asserted that although some prosecutions have been secured, the team remains focused on ensuring that all election-related offences are thoroughly investigated and dealt with in accordance with the law.
