The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) of TUC Ghana has expressed opposition to the government’s plan to appoint a transaction advisor for the transition of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) into Private Sector Participation (PSP).
In a statement, PUWU described the government’s decision as surprising, given the ongoing turnaround programme being jointly implemented by ECG management and workers under the union’s guidance.
PUWU stated that it had agreed with authorities through the Ministry of Energy to focus on reviving ECG through internal reforms rather than privatisation.
According to PUWU, ECG workers have made significant progress under the turnaround programme over the past five months, including improved revenue collection, reduced system losses, and stabilised power supply, achievements acknowledged by government officials such as Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Majority Leader Hon. Mahama Ayariga, and Energy Minister Hon. John Abdullai Jinapor.
PUWU has therefore urged the government to halt all actions towards PSP at this stage, allow the turnaround programme to run its full course, and evaluate its outcomes before considering alternative options.
“Halt all actions toward PSP at this stage. Allow the turnaround programme agreed with ECG Workers and PUWU—TUC to run its full course. The outcomes of this programme should be evaluated and streamlined to agree with national policy in energy distribution in Ghana,” he said.
