President John Mahama has reiterated Africa’s demand for reparative justice. The Ghanaian leader posited that the continent has reached a point where forgetting the past is no longer an option.
Speaking at the opening of the Diaspora Summit 2025 on December 19, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama stated that Africa is at “a very pivotal place” in its journey and cannot afford to move backwards or pretend the past never happened.
President Mahama admonished Africa to confront racism and discrimination directly, emphasising the need for reparative justice and acknowledgement of historical crimes like the transatlantic slave trade.
He announced that Ghana will move a motion at the UN to recognise the slave trade as ‘the greatest crime against humanity’.
He further called for unity among Africans and the diaspora to demand tangible reparations, including debt cancellation and the return of stolen artefacts.
He added that Africa must push for the creation of legal, institutional and international mechanisms to advance reparative justice. He believes the call must include “tangible measures such as debt cancellation, monetary compensation, return of stolen artefacts, institutional reform and transformative economic redress in the global economic system.”
