Governance expert Dr. Richard Fiadamor has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to implementing the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) report, which was submitted to him earlier this week.
Dr. Fiadamor highlighted the President’s decision to make the report public as a key indicator of his sincerity.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he noted that this transparency sets Mahama apart from previous leaders.
”What I have observed is that President Mahama has demonstrated enough commitment to see these recommendations implemented. By ordering the report to be made public, he has shown he is not prepared to let it stay sealed or buried behind a mere white paper,” Fiadamor stated.
A significant hurdle to the implementation may be the reaction from Parliament.
The report suggests decoupling the Legislature from the Executive—a move that would prevent the President from appointing Members of Parliament (MPs) as Ministers.
Dr. Fiadamor acknowledged that while MPs might be unhappy about losing certain privileges guaranteed by the current Constitution, they must prioritize the national interest.
He argued that the current system hinders efficiency.sating serving as both a Minister and an MP makes it nearly impossible for appointees to participate effectively in parliamentary business.
Using the Finance Minister as an example, Fiadamor questioned how one person can stabilize the economy while simultaneously attending to daily parliamentary duties.
The expert stressed that “Ghana is bigger than all of us,” urging lawmakers to embrace the principle of separation of powers to entrench democratic governance.
He advised MPs to accept that certain privileges must be scrapped in the interest of building a stronger, more effective nation.
“This issue if pretending to be a Minister and a sitting Member of Parliament is not working. For example look at the Finance Minister and the job he has to do in stabilising the economy and you explained ext this same Minister to attend to Parliament everyday, how effective can such a person be. So the MPs should know and understand that Ghana is bigger than all of us. We are building a nation and a building and the separation of powers must indeed apply.”
