Mr Asante Gyebi, the Acting Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, has revealed that the state possesses the technology to track unlicensed firearms once the current amnesty period expires.
The nationwide gun amnesty, directed by President John Dramani Mahama through the Ministry of Interior, began on December 1, 2025, and is scheduled to conclude on January 15, 2026.
The initiative allows citizens to surrender unregistered or illegal firearms without fear of arrest or prosecution.
Mr. Gyebi explained that the program aims to curb gun violence and the proliferation of illicit weapons.
To facilitate this, the Commission has established designated collection points in every district where citizens can safely surrender weapons or, in some cases, seek legitimate registration.
While those who come forward now are protected, Mr. Gyebi issued a stern warning to those who hold onto illegal weapons past the deadline.
Defaulters will be liable for a First-Degree Felony, which carries a potential sentence of ten years in prison.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio’s political show, ‘As it is in Ghana’ (87.5FM Ghana / 92.4FM UK), he confirmed that the Commission is bolstering its surveillance capabilities:
“I can assure you that it is going to happen. As I speak with you, we have weapon detection equipment in Ghana and are in the process of purchasing more in 2026. Through this equipment, we can scan specific areas to detect weapons. Those found with unlicensed or unregistered firearms will be arrested and prosecuted.”
Beyond technology, Mr. Gyebi noted that the Commission would utilise a network of informants to identify those refusing to comply.
“We have several means,” he stated. “Nobody should doubt the systems in place. After the deadline, you will be arrested.”
The initiative, themed “Silencing the Guns to Save Our Lives,” is part of a broader strategy to remove illicit weapons fueling crime.
Mr. Gyebi ended with a final plea:”Count the cost and surrender your guns. If you refuse, it suggests a negative mindset, and we are coming after you. Be assured that after this period, there will be no more amnesties. It is no longer business as usual.”
