The pressure group Arise Ghana is calling for the immediate arrest of former Finance Minister, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, who is currently outside the country.
Group member Listowell Nana Poku revealed that Arise Ghana is preparing to picket at the forecourt of the American Embassy.
The group intends to demand that the U.S. government deport the former minister so he can face legal scrutiny in Ghana.
The demand stems from allegations of financial extortion during Mr. Ofori-Atta’s tenure. Mr. Poku emphasised that the former minister must be held accountable under the full rigors of the law.
“As part of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, we call for the immediate arrest and extradition of Ken Ofori-Atta to face justice in Ghana,” Mr. Poku stated.
The organization stressed that investigations under the ORAL initiative must lead to robust prosecutions and fair convictions. The group warned that failing to hold high-ranking officials accountable could seriously undermine Ghana’s democratic progress.
Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Finance Minister of Ghana, is in ICE custody in Virginia, US, due to immigration issues.
His lawyers say he is cooperating and working to resolve the matter.
The Ghanaian government has filed an extradition request, citing corruption investigations.
Meanwhile, the group has also also called for for a broad, inclusive national conversation regarding the country’s progress.
.Speaking at a press briefing held at the Ghana International Press Center Marion Gifty Nyaaba, co-convener of the group, stated that
“What we discuss today is not designed for a single news cycle or a viral headline. It is crafted to endure, to withstand the rigours of scrutiny, the passage of time, and the unyielding judgment of history itself,” Nyaaba said.
“This will continue in our homes, offices, media, and indeed on social media, including Arise Ghana’s social media handles.”
She encouraged Ghanaians to participate in what she described as reflective process that demands the government fulfill its campaign promises.
“We are here to examine where we stood just one year ago, where we find ourselves today, and the trajectory we are charting for tomorrow under the legacy term of President John Dramani Mahama.”
