The President, John Dramani Mahama, has announced that personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service who were filmed assaulting a journalist from Class Media while covering a fire incident in Kasoa have been placed on interdiction.
He emphasised that the assault is unacceptable and contradicts media freedom and professionalism, emphasising that such conduct does not align with the expected values of security personnel.
The President made these comments during an interview on GTV when he visited the state broadcaster on Thursday, January 8, 2026.
He highlighted the necessity for the retraining of officers to ensure appropriate interaction with journalists, stressing that both security personnel and reporters serve the public.
“There is no way we will tolerate the continued assault on journalists. We have engaged with the Ghana Journalists Association on these issues and will ensure they are in touch with the security services.
“Many of our security personnel need reorientation to understand that, just as they provide safety, journalists are also performing their duty to inform the public. They are not antagonists to each other; they are both serving the public,” President Mahama said.
Journalist Samuel Addo was physically confronted and manhandled by fire service officers while covering a fire outbreak at Kasoa New Market on January 5, 2026.
