The Minority Caucus in Parliament is accusing Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr Johnson Asiama, of failing in his oversight duties, leading to a $214 million loss in the Gold-for-Reserves programme.
Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, addressing the press in Parliament today, criticised the programme’s management under Dr Asiama’s leadership, calling for a thorough investigation and accountability.
Appiagyei questioned the Bank’s oversight and handling of the situation, pointing out that excessive fees were allowed, trading losses mounted, and controls failed.
She also referenced Dr Asiama’s past benefit from a nolle prosequi, highlighting public concern over accountability for politically exposed actors.
The caucus emphasises that transparency and accountability are crucial for maintaining public confidence in Ghana’s financial institutions.
They’re warning that failure to address these issues could erode trust in the Bank of Ghana and the broader financial governance framework.
