The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has secured the conviction and sentencing of two individuals for robbery and related offences following thorough investigations and successful prosecution at the Bekwai Circuit Court.

They were first put before the Bekwai Circuit Court on 30th January 2024 on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, aiding and abetting robbery, and robbery, contrary to Sections 23(1), 20(1), and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

On 5th January 2026, the Court, presided over by His Honour Mr Isaac Appeatu Esq., convicted the two and sentenced Francis Oppong to fifteen (15) years imprisonment with hard labour, while Francis Nyamekye was sentenced to twenty-five (25) years imprisonment with hard labour. Both convicts have since been transferred to the Kumasi Central Prison to commence their sentences.

The convictions stem from a robbery incident that occurred on 16th December 2023 at Kyekyewere near Obuasi, involving a small-scale miner. Investigations established that the convicts, together with accomplices currently at large, planned and executed the robbery at the victim’s residence and mining site. The accused, Francis Oppong, who lived in the same vicinity as the complainant, was found to have monitored the victim’s movements and relayed information to the robbery gang.

During the attack, the victim was assaulted and sustained injuries, while the robbers made away with a pump-action gun, a Huawei mobile phone valued at GH¢1,200, eighteen pounds of gold valued at about GH¢100,000, and cash amounting to GH¢2,000. Further intelligence later led to the arrest of Francis Nyamekye at a private hospital in Obuasi while he was seeking medical treatment after sustaining gunshot injuries during a failed robbery attempt.

Police investigations culminated in the successful prosecution of the two convicts, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining accomplices still at large to face justice.
