Deputy Attorney General Dr Srem Sai has revealed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s US visa was revoked as of June 2025, and his ICE arrest has nothing to do with the expiry or impending expiry of his visa.
He stated that the former finance minister’s attempt to create the impression that the ICE arrest and detention are merely about trying to adjust status through a petition is false.
According to him, ICE does not and would not clamp down on people in civil matters, meaning Ken Ofori-Atta’s ICE detention is connected to a criminal matter.
“ICE will not come for you unless you have visa issues; that is what has happened,” he said on the KeyPoints on TV3 Saturday, January 10.
“In June 2025, his visa was revoked; it’s not an expiration of the visa. The information we have is that his visa was revoked. So he has been living in America without a visa,” he revealed.
Meanwhile, he has also stated that the Ghanaian authorities collaborated with the US law enforcement agencies on this matter.
“We are keenly involved in this matter. We collaborate with law enforcement agencies in this matter,” he said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, January 10.
The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained the former Minister for Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta.
Details that emerged indicated that he is being detained in connection with the status of his current stay in the United States.
His lawyers, Menka-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline and Partners, on January 7, through a public notice, said, “Mr Ofori-Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status, which authorises a person to stay in the US legally past the period of validity of their visa. Under US law, a change of status by this method is common,” the lawyers explained.
“The public is therefore advised to note that Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, as a law-abiding person, is fully cooperating with ICE to have this issue resolved,” they said.
