Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu has encouraged former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to return home and face justice if he believes in his innocence.
He made the remarks while responding to questions during an interaction with journalists on the first year of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
The minister noted that public officials are subject to scrutiny, and whether you are in government or out of government, you have to subject yourself to accountability.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu noted that once you serve in public office, you must open yourself up to accountability, indicating that there are several individuals who worked under the first term of President John Mahama who were subjected to various judicial processes while Mr Ofori-Atta was in government.
He noted that there is no reason why the former minister should evade accountability.
“Like all public officials, we are subjected to scrutiny. So whether you are in government or outside government, once you have served in public office, you must be open to scrutiny and accountability. There are many public officials, including some who served under President Mahama during his first tenure, who were subjected to all manner of judicial processes with the view of exerting accountability from them, and Mr Ken Ofori-Atta was in government when that happened. So I see no reason why he should seek to evade accountability when similar questions are being asked.
He argued that President John Dramani Mahama was a subject of investigation, and so the former Minister should equally avail himself for investigations.
“Indeed President Mahama himself was a subject of investigation… He subjected himself to investigations. He was interviewed by the Special Prosecutor. Eventually it was found out that the allegations were unfounded and nothing untoward had happened in that particular matter, and now he is walking a free man. So if Ken Ofori-Atta is confident that indeed he has done nothing untoward, I think he should avail himself to the appropriate authorities to carry out their investigations.”
