Nana Bonsu, a prominent advocate for accountable tax governance, has underscored the need for officials at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to maintain their support for Commissioner-General Anthony Akwasi Sarpong as he discharges his duties.
He commended the Commissioner-General for his pivotal role in restoring unity within the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA), noting that the group had faced significant internal difficulties until recently.
According to Nana Bonsu, these efforts have brought much-needed “sanity” to the trade sector regarding tax compliance.
Nana Bonsu asserted that, compared to previous years when business owners complained bitterly about harassment from tax officials, Mr. Sarpong has introduced a more effective system. This new approach has fostered a cordial and healthy relationship between the GRA and the business community.
Appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he argued: “With the way the Commissioner-General has started, if this momentum is maintained, the GRA will continue to meet and exceed its revenue targets.”
To ensure continued success, Nana Bonsu offered the following advice and observations:
For GRA officials he urged staff to remain disciplined, adhere to ethical standards, and avoid being compromised. He noted that it is rare to find leaders of such dignity and accountability, and therefore, they must be supported to deliver results.
He admonished business owners to support the GRA leadership by strictly complying with national tax laws.
He then advised those making efforts to have him removed to stop with immediate effect.
“The Commissioner-General of the GRA has proven to be an effective, efficient, and highly competent leader. Since his appointment, he has transformed the authority, most notably by fostering a much-improved relationship between the GRA and the business community; the era of harassment is behind us.
Despite these clear achievements, there are those scheming to have him removed for their own agendas. I want to be clear: these efforts will not succeed. I appeal to President Mahama to ignore the naysayers plotting against him. As a true team leader who is well-respected by his staff, he has proven he is the right man for the job. The President should allow him the space to continue his vital work.”
